Bishop Gorman Claims Second Straight Nevada 4A Football Title

by Jeff Fisher
Nevada High School Football Huddle

Bishop Gorman's season began a little slowly, losing two of their first five games...albeit to national powers Hamilton (AZ) and De La Salle (CA), but they saved their best for last to claim its second straight 4A title.

The Gaels beat McQueen 40-0 behind quarterback Jarrett Solomon, who according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal sat at the first quarter for missing a practice earlier in the week.  Solomon threw three touchdown passes to give him 41 for the season.

by Jeff Fisher
Nevada High School Football Huddle

Defending 4A champ Bishop Gorman will square-off with McQueen Saturday to decide who's the best this season.

Gorman, which is looking for its third title in four years, has been on a roll since beginning the season nationally-ranked and then losing two games to two other nationally-ranked programs...Hamilton (AZ) and De La Salle (CA).

McQueen, on the other hand, is no slouch itself. The Lancers have won six state titles over the last two decades.

Battle of Arizona and Nevada National Powers goes to Chandler Hamilton

by Jeff Fisher
Nevada High School Football Huddle

When the dust cleared on Saturday's Barry Sollenberger Kickoff Classic battle between national powers Chandler Hamilton and Bishop Gorman (defending Nevada 4A champ), it was Arizona high school football fans who owned the bragging rights.

Defending 5A Division I Hamilton extended its win streak to 26-games with a 24-17 win in the fifth renewal of the game that signals the start to the high school football season in both Arizona and Nevada.

The Arizona Republic reports that Hamilton's defense did a good job of controlling the Gaels, who led the nation in scoring last year and return eight offensive starters this year.

Both teams entered the contest ranked in several national pre-season high school football polls.

We'll find out on August 21st when Gorman faces two-time defending Class 5A Division I state champ Chandler Hamilton will be put to the test on August 21st in the fifth annual Sollenberger Classic at Northern Arizona University.

It's the third straight year that the Sollenberger Classic has featured champs from Arizona and Nevada.  Arizona has won the first two match-ups with Peoria Centennial beating McQueen 51-20; Bishop Gorman lost to Brophy Prep 16-6.

“We are excited to continue the relationship with the NIAAA and their staff for the third straight year,”

making our Nevada participants feel welcomed and putting on this first‐class event.”

Oklahoma Football Star Gives Back With High School Football Camp

by Jeff Fisher
Nevada High School Football Huddle

We all hear and read stories about pros that give back once they reach the highest level of their sport.

Today I found a story of a guy that will find his way into the NFL next year, but for now, he's giving back in his hometown.

The Las Vegas Sun reports that Oklahoma safety Quinton Carter, a graduate of Cheyenne High School in North Las Vegas, spent this Memorial Day weekend teaching teenagers the basic points of football at a camp he organized.

Kudos to Carter, who was a second-team all-Big 12 Conference safety last fall, and two years ago started a non-profit organization called Serving Others through Unity and Leadership or SOUL

Nevada Proposes Football Realignment

by Jeff Fisher
Nevada High School Football Huddle

The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association has been talking about realignment for years, and now there's something on paper.

A NIAA committee made-up of schools from the north and south released a draft of how the realignment, which is designed to cut down on travel and time away from class, will look. The NIAA will send the proposal out to its 105 schools and ask for a "favor" or "not in favor" vote.

Depending on how the survey of schools goes, the NIAA would vote on the realignment in March. If approved, it would take effect this fall and be in-place for two years.

Click here to check-out the proposed realignment from the NIAA.
